An Unexpected Night Passage to Burnett Heads – Our Tips for Staying Safe in the darkness

Rob discussing the equipment and procedures we use on Our Dreamtime to sail safely at night.

We leave Great Keppel Island in the early morning darkness with the plan of sailing south to Pancake Creek but when we get there the anchorage is very full of boats. So we decide to keep going into the night clocking up 131 nautical miles to reach Burnett Heads.

Night passages are normally well planned however unexpected night passages can happen for all sorts of reasons and you need to have the boat prepared for one, just in case. Join us as we talk about the night passage procedures we have in place to keep us and the boat sailing through the darkness. Please tell us any other suggestions you might have in the comments section under the video.

Sunrise is always welcome on Our Dreamtime

We don't race - However if there's another boat on the water heading the same way,
we may practice our sail trimming. lol

Sailing upwind with all sails set.

Threading our way through the mooring field off Gladstone.

You can't see a lot when sailing at night

Trapped by Great Keppel Island Again – It really is an Australian sailors’ favourite - Episode 41

We continue sailing Our Dreamtime south from Port Clinton, making our way past the bogey spot of our passage north at Cape manifold. It was here we suffered our only ever knockdown five months earlier and Karen was still feeling apprehensive. This time however the sailing conditions are fantastic as we enjoy a very relaxed cruise and are even joined by dolphins. Then it’s on to beautiful Great Keppel Island where a planned short stay stretches on as the island’s attractions trap us once again. It’s always hard to leave GKI. https://youtu.be/XaA1MKQrpBI

Doing it Tough - Another Island to ourselves

Another tropical island anchorage to ourselves
Hunter Island & Port Clinton Episode 40

Sail along with us through Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Islands on the Whitby 42 KetchOur DreamtimeAfter a sleepless night on anchor-watch, we couldn’t wait to escape from the rocky bottomed bay on the southern side of Curlew Island and make our way south to Hunter Island and enjoy a little piece of paradise all by ourselves

The next day we dodged a warship and battled big currents around Cape Townsend.

The fishing lines were in and out of the water while we traversed green conservation zones before we found a very nice bay on the northern end of port Clinton to drop anchor for the night.

Hope you enjoy the passage.
