“A face tells a million stories”

We have been producing images for thousands of years and long before the written word was introduced. Prehistoric or primitive art was a form of communication through images and it was these pictures that did all the talking. Fast-forward to today and our image-saturated lives means that pictures still speak louder than ever.

In a world of social media and the instant sharing of images. Pictures pack a punch and are stronger than ever. Pictures can be emotional and beautiful, painful and traumatic and a million things in between. They tell a story without words and they instantly have impact.

Even this beautiful youthful face tells us so many stories, many will see her natural beauty others will see her dark thoughtful eyes and behind them her intelligence. But what do you see in her raw, naked, beautiful face? What’s the first thing that you notice?

They can affect our opinions and even motivate us to behave differently and take on a whole new perspective. Photos have the power to shape identities, life experiences and points of view.

Even when time and space conspire to restrict us to a single moment within a single frame, as photographers we strive for results that transcend these restrictions. They are created with the intention of providing insight into the subject, the author, the world, and especially you as viewers. Transversing all cultures, religion and languages photos can generate emotions unique only to each viewer.

So what matters is whether a photo is honest about the moment it has captured, whether it is able to use that moment to tell stories that are essential to us and our collective human experience.

As I look through my photo collection I look at all the faces that stare out at me. I love to capture the natural, the deep thoughts and the playfulness that the human face can master. They remind me not only of all the good times I’ve had whilst travelling but the intimate and sometimes complex world I’ve been obliged to view. They remind me of how different we are from each other but ultimately the same within. There is one picture in particular that reminds me of a time that I will never forget.

It was only last year at one of our most memorable places in Indonesia, the Bajau Village of Bungin. We visited with friends Anthony and Lynda, who were joining us on Our Dreamtime for a short time, to sail Lombok and parts of Sumbwa. Bungin is nicknamed the most populated island in the world with around 3,400 Bajau Tribe, currently live in close quarters on around 8.5 hectares of homes built over water. There is no running water to these homes, electricity is only on for 3 hours a day. For this modern era one might be shocked to know that the homes have no bathrooms, these human undertakings are done in the sea.

This is a world far from how most of the world live. Most would not believe that in today’s technically advanced world the simple things in life are not available to everyone, but mobile phones are.

In this one photo that I speak of. The way this lady laughs, describes to me, her contentment in life, her life is happy and she filled with kindness, it shows confidence, strength and personality. I am a total stranger in her village, she is a lady sitting with family and friends. I ask to take a photograph, in modern society we would ask, why? what for? what are you using it for? She says yes and just laughs at the idea that “I” want “her” photo.

I feel that you can tell who the person is just by what they are doing and how they are looking into the camera. I believe that a face tells a million stories. What do you see in her laughing face?

Children are the most innocent to photograph, they have not yet learnt to hide their emotions, it is raw. At times you just get that perfect photo that tells a million stories. They aren’t always the smiling ones, that make your heart melt, sometimes they are the quite shy looks that capture your heart.

The following are a collection of photos that firstly I hope you enjoy, but if you take time to study them you to may see some of the stories they tell. I would love to hear your thoughts on the stories you see within. Cheers K
