I found by importing smaller areas (eg individual reefs) into Open CPN the detail was better. As we are heading into the poorly charted Louisiade Island group this year we have just started using both the Iridium Go and the Google Earth-Open CPN combination to practice with them as we cruise up the Queensland Coast. The initial set up of the apps for the Iridium Go is a real pain. Make sure you get it all sorted well before you leave. Now it's up and going all seems good so far although we are yet to try out some features. When we had an autopilot problem at remote Pearl Bay far from mobile service it was great to be able to phone our tech and get help trouble shooting the issue. The Predictwind weather we get via the Iridium has also been very useful. Regarding Open CPN, we have it loaded on a laptop PC equipped with a GPS dongle thatplugs into a USB port. We then view it beside our normal navionics equipped plotter. You do have to download the Google Earth images you will need in advance while you have good internet connection. You can not get those over the Iridium. Here are some great links for info about using satellite imagery with OpenCPN. Hope it helps. Have a great and safe trip. Am particularly keen to try to get to the "remote" Swain Reef area and have been looking into the IridiumGo/Predictwind combination which I notice you are utilising. Any feedback good and bad? Also any tips on using Google Earth in real time for navigation purposes (most of the blogs I've read who've cruised this area seem to rely heavily on this). You use Open CPN???Neil Tuddenhamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4210461039477374674.post-82072557617556746012016-06-25T12:27:14.343+02:002016-06-25T12:27:14.343+02:00Hey fellow dreamers.
